Hexa Sort Game: Understanding the New Favorite in Simple and Fun Games

About Hexa Sort
Hexa Sort is a simple puzzle game that was made together by Lion Studios, Mindstorm Studios, and gamebra.in. It came out in July 2023 for Android phones, and then in November for Apple phones.

The game quickly became very popular.

By February 2024, Hexa Sort was one of the top 10 puzzle games on the download charts, and it was the 9th most downloaded puzzle game. In the US, it did really well and got to the 3rd spot in March according to AppMagic.

Also, the game is doing well in terms of money earned.

For several months, Hexa Sort has been around the 50th place for earning money through in-app purchases (IAP) in the puzzle category, making more than $2 million (AppMagic). This is notable because most of the money the game makes is from ads, not from purchases inside the app. NextBig games says that about 70% of the game's money comes from ads, and 30% from in-app purchases.

Hexa Sort: Game Analysis
Let's look at the key parts of Hexa Sort, from how it's played to how it makes money and gets new players.

Main Gameplay
In Hexa Sort, players arrange hexagonal tiles by color on a board. When they line up ten or more tiles of the same color, the tiles merge and disappear. This clears space for more tiles.

Players keep clearing the board and adding new tiles, aiming to meet color goals and move to the next level.

Mechanics
The game mixes two ideas—stacking and sorting.

Players sort the tiles, but the stacking happens on its own. As players line up tiles of the same color, they stack up and then vanish with fun animations and sounds.

These elements together make the game relaxing and rewarding.

Stacking is a popular feature in games right now, often seen as calming. Adding color matching and sorting makes the game both a soothing and smart challenge.

Level Design
In games with simple actions like this, the design of the levels is crucial.

For Hexa Sort, the levels are balanced and engaging.

How does the developer do this?

In the first level, the game teaches players quickly with animated hand guides. To complete a level, players need to sort various colors of tiles and reach a goal shown on a progress bar. Players earn coins for each level they finish.

As players go up levels, they see more colors of tiles, making the game harder. For example, level 1 has four colors, but level 5 has eight. The game also changes the board shape, the goals on the progress bar, and adds boosters, ads, and in-app purchases.

According to SensorTower, the top-selling in-app purchases for the game are the smallest coin pack priced at $1.99, a Safety Net Offer for $4.99, and a Piggy Bank offer also for $4.99 (iOS, US).

This information reveals quite a bit about the spending habits of the game's players.

Firstly, it shows that most players prefer spending a small to moderate amount of money on the game.

Interestingly, unlike many other hybrid-casual games, the offers to remove ads are not top sellers. This suggests that the game does not annoy players with too many disruptive ads.

The way players spend money in this game is similar to the spending patterns seen in casual games.
